Signs are one of my favorite photographic subjects, and I collect all kinds along with any that happen to catch my eye. The most attractive target has to be what is called a “ghost sign”. These are usually hand painted signs from earlier generation often showing favorite or forgotten products of a bygone age. After the ever allusive ghost signs, I really like metal signs and neon signs. The metal signs often have neon incorporated in them, as well as there being just straight neon tube designed signs.
But in the City there are a host of other interesting types of signs to watch for. I get a kick out of the more naive hand painted signs that you see on many businesses. Then there are the ruins porn signs on abandoned and blighted buildings. Those offer quick and easy irony for the lazy photographer/would-be artist in all of us. Detroit is a target rich environment for all manner of wonderful interesting, and historic signage.
