Mary – the ceilings are plaster, which deflects adherence of paint when it absorbs water via leaks.
Glad you got the chance to go back and photograph an empty St. Albertus this time, dFUNK. I can’t imagine anyone today designing a structure so elaborate and detailed.
A dumb question (for those of us not architectually-attuned). What is the ceiling made, which (sadly) appears to be either peeling or falling off?
