Built in 1894, this had been Detroits oldest standing school. It suffered the usual humiliating fate of abandonment, looting, vandalism and finally arson and demolition.

Just like over one hundred other historical school buildings currently being decommissioned in the city.

Belden Brick of Ohio – this brick maker is an excellent reference for dating structures, although we know when this one was built.

And last but not least, the iconic Detroit “burnt fire hydrant”.

  • I was at the Antique Doorknob Collectors’ Convention in Hartford, CT, last week. I purchased a know that reads, “James McMillan, Delray, Mich.” I’m assuming it came from the school. Does anyone know for sure?
