all who wander are not lost

Former location of the White Room studio – a building no doubt awaiting conversion into high priced lofts. My friend Mike lived here back in the 1990’s and we’d hang out in his 6000 square foot loft after work. The famous White Room studio was located one floor below Mike’s place.

What was recorded here ?

Let’s start with: Aretha Franklin, Electric Six, D12, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bob Seger, Tori Amos, and the Detroit Cobra’s.

Anybody ever hear of a guy called Kid Rock ?

He recorded Devil Without A Cause right here at White Room.

* “Welcome 2 the Party (Ode 2 the Old School)”
* “I Am the Bullgod”
* “Bawitdaba”
* “Cowboy”
* “Only God Knows Why”
* “Wasting Time”

We’d see Kid now and then in the elevator or outside – and Mike has the best story of seeing Kid on the elevator with a potted tree.

Mike: “Hey Bob, where you goin’ with the tree?”

Kid: “Up on the roof, give it some air”

Mike: “Cool.”

Later Mike saw him out front on Griswold sitting in a convertible…with the tree. Hahahaha !

  • well, that building sure appears empty, but I found no other location. I think the guys have a music store near Ferndale now selling vintage gear.

    Anybody has info – let us know.

  • I did not realize white room studios moved? Did they move or do they cease to exist? There is a lot of history in the small area and some nice future plans. I can’t wait to see it’s transformation.

  • in the movie A Detroit Thing, shot’s were produced from inside the studio where Kid Rock was recording and I always wondered which building it was in. Thanks!
