Edwin Denby High School – 1930. Interesting that such a beautiful building was constructed after the Great Depression. Many such buildings predate the Crash.

  • What a scoundrel – and finally a real life reason for having learned about the Teapot Dome Scandal !

  • Edwin Denby, Sec of the Navy, died while avoiding conviction in the Teapot Dome Scandal by promising the money to build both Denby and Pershing High Schools.

  • You should check out Cooley High on the westside of Detroit. The school itself has the same design as Denby, but much more ornate on the sides of the building. You must check out what is at the top of each door three floors up. The relief work is spectacular.

  • Regarding the Denby school being built after the crash: it was still very early in the descent into The Depression. Probably all of the planning and funding were established while things were still flush. The Empire State Building was started in 1930 and completed in 1931.

  • Very nice. I had to look up Edwin Denby to find out who he was.

  • On a Deco High School kick are we? Nice looking buildings. Personally I think Deco was the high point of American design. And how refreshing to see that Denby and Pershing haven’t been destroyed by the forces of darkness.
